Panoramic Ocean Views from the Edge of the Forest  Experience the breathtaking beauty of coastal downeast Maine in our spectacular, secluded oceanfront cottage on Moose Cove in South Trescott. /images/MC/P000190-EHead-LMI-t.jpg Nestled into the side of a hill 125 feet from high tide, the cottage is a 2-bedroom contemporary designed for its unusual setting on a forested hillside at the edge of the sea. Extensive glass across the front of the cottage makes the outdoors part of the living space, exploiting the P000498_MC_front_cottage-t.jpg panoramic southern views of the open ocean, headlands, islands, and seals basking in the sun.

The sky over the forest is so clear that on a cloudless, fogless night you will see a dazzling display of stars over the ocean which you didn't realize existed. A full moon lights up the ocean with a carpet of millions of "dancing diamonds".

The cottage sits on the ocean-edge of 43 private acres of forest with 400 feet of secluded gravel beach and rocky shorefront. The grounds are all forested, with the cottage accessible off a private road shared by a handful of similar large secluded parcels along the shore.

Spectacular Rocky Shoreline   The cottage is on a 20 foot bluff, 125 feet from high tide, on the outer section of the cove near Eastern Head. There is /images/MC/P001264-0305-MC-cottage-from-ocean-t.jpg a path down to the water which is easy to traverse, except by the very young or the elderly. The shore line is rocky, with smooth, flat granite on which you can sit out by the water and watch the seals and the sea. /images/MC/P000181-991011-waves-on-cliff-t.jpg This is a protected cove, but on the open ocean. The water is 30 feet deep right off the rocks. There is a small section of beach composed of fine gravel and stones. The water is usually calm /images/MC/P000192-991011-flat-rocks-t.jpg but stormy weather drives waves crashing onto the rocks. It is otherwise normally perfect for canoing and kayaking, but very cold for swimming. A small brook near the cottage winds through the woods down to the ocean. A trail up the stream leads to a hidden waterfall in the private woods near the cottage.

Enjoy Meals at Water's Edge   The kitchen and dining area opens to the living room and shares the floor-to-ceiling glass facing the spectacular ocean views. /images/MC/mc_livkt-t.jpg The fully equipped, efficiently designed modern kitchen has a counter top eating area, as well as a table, overlooking the ocean. The kitchen has a complete set of modern appliances including electric oven, microwave, and dishwasher. Sliding glass doors open to the large wooden deck, outfitted with a picnic table and grill for cooking fresh local seafood in this seaside clearing in the woods. There are far fewer insects here than at the inland lakes, and normally they are not present because of the ocean breezes.

Comfortably Sleeps Four   The cottage has five rooms with two large bedrooms, making it comfortable for four. P000158-991011-MCview-from-mbr-t.jpg A six foot wide plate glass window in the master bedroom faces the ocean. The second bedroom in the back has no window as the cottage is built into the side of the hill.

The modern bathroom has a large tiled shower and marble bench. /images/MC/mc_mbed-t.jpg The washer and dryer are in a separate utility and storage area near the back door.

This secluded, extraordinarily private seaside retreat in the forest has no telephone or live TV reception, but does have a TV/VCR and AM/FM radio. A NOAA weather radio also keeps you aware of the latest regional reports. Or spend your time walking miles through the forest and along the shore, watching the seabirds and seals. Or take it all in — perhaps shared with a book from the library — while sitting on the deck, at the edge of the bluff, or out on the smooth granite rocks by the water.

Secluded but Convenient to Town   The cottage is a mile through the forest P000187-991011-MCroad-t.jpg from the nearest paved road. You could spend the entire week and not see anyone else there. You cannot see any other cottages unless you really search for them.

But secluded as it is, you are only 20 minutes from the center of Lubec, 15 minutes up the coast from the fishing village of Cutler and 10 minutes from the largest grocery store in the area. There are two grocery stores, gas stations, post office, auto parts/repair, library & public internet access, and a number of informal restaurants in addition to other small shops and the bridge to Campobello Island, all in or near the village of Lubec. The County Seat at Machias is 40 minutes away.

There is not much “night life” in Lubec, and no “tourist traps”, but even if there were you wouldn't know it deep in the forest at Moose Cove. There is just the calming sound of the sea and normally calm surf lapping at the rocks, small animals and birds in the woods, an occasional moose, seals in the ocean, and two distant lighthouses flashing at the cottage from far out at sea. A local lobsterman occasionally tends his traps out in the cove.

Previous Vacationers' Impressions

from when this cottage used to be available to the public

- "We really enjoyed our stay at your cottage. It went far beyond our expectations! We had read all the material on your web pages, and it did not (and could not!) prepare us for the view out your front window. We pulled in about 4 pm Saturday and unpacked ... Then the four of us walked into the living room and looked, and looked, and looked. When we found our vocal chords all we could say was "WOW". We're not rookies to the Maine coast. I grew up in Maine, this is our third consecutive summer of spending a week 'down east'. This was the best!! Thank you."

- "We had a great time at Moose Cove! It was a perfect cottage and its location was absolutely wonderful! We enjoyed the sunrises and watching the many white/grey seals lounge around on the rocks during low tide."

- "What a place you have! The natural splendor, lack of air and noise pollution and general heavenliness was the best! We sighted Minke whales, one Finback and 36 seals (at one time) just sitting on the rocks outside. We found the cottage to be wonderful. Thank you for the nice dishes and well-stocked cupboards you provide-it's a pleasure to cook in your kitchen."

- "We enjoyed the fantastic view and the peace and quiet of the surroundings, yet we were still relatively close to civilization at Moose Cove. I especially liked having modern appliances minus the TV and phone which could have interferred with our enjoyment of the outside. We counted 28 seals on the rocks, saw a minke whale come into the cove, enjoyed watching the lobstermen working in the cove and on the last day of our visit... we saw a MOOSE! "
